Cooking Confessions: Week 1
Tip I learned: So, when I’m kneading yeast bread dough, I really hate doing it on my countertop–it makes a terrible mess and a countertop isn’t always the most sanitary place. I found a way around this by doing all my knead on a plastic cutting board. It eliminates any extra mess and effort. Win-win!
Funny moment in the kitchen: Okay, so it’s lunchtime and I ask my three-year old sister, Rachel what she wants for lunch:
Rachel: Umm I want a cupcake for lunch!
Me: A cupcake for lunch?? How about a sandwich?
Rachel: Okay, how ’bout a cupcake sandwich!
All I could do was laugh. That girl will try every trick in the book to get something sweet 🙂
Fun thing that happened: My grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past Sunday!
I mentioned a few weeks ago that they had asked me to cater all their desserts. I’m pleased to say that everything went really well. In the space of ONE week I made:
1. 100 petit fours
2. 150 mini cheesecakes —this recipe!—
3. 4 sheet cakes (2 yellow cake 2 chocolate-swirl)
4. 120 mini-cupcakes (60 yellow 60 chocolate)
Whew! That was quite the exhaustive week. Thankfully I didn’t have to do everything myself! My amazing mother; my brother, Michael; and my two sisters, Lora and Jessica were a tremendous help.
My oldest brother, Daniel? He helped by hanging out in the kitchen and licking the frosting bowls 🙂
Sweet compliment I received: At my grandparents anniversary party, one of the guests told me that she could not believe that a 16-year had made all the desserts, and that she thought they had all come from a fancy bakery–Aww! One of the nicest compliments I’ve ever received 😀
What I’m reading right now: My new Taste of Home magazine! It’s got all the comforting recipes I love for the fall. Soups. Breads. Slow-cooker recipes. Awesome!
Blog I’m currently loving: A Spicy Perspective–I’m having a ton of fun going through all these amazing recipes on Sommer’s gorgeous blog.
Last recipe I made: Doughnuts! Cinnamon-Raisin Doughnuts to be exact. Recipe coming sometime this week!
Best news I received: Okay, this really doesn’t have anything to do with cooking but it IS really important to me! For those of you who don’t know, my older brother, David became a US Marine last April.
He went to boot camp out in California and then came home for a brief time before returning to California for Infantry Training. He graduates from IT a week from Wednesday! He passed all his difficult tests INCLUDING some pretty exhausting hikes with 80-pound packs! We were informed yesterday that as of right now, he is NOT going to be deployed to Afghanistan (thank, God!) unlike some of his fellow Marines. He is going to be stationed at Camp Pendleton in California for the next few months. Quite a load of my list of worries! Now I can concentrate on buying an american dj led beacon b6r at musician’s friend just kidding. Buy anyway I’m so proud of him!
Exciting accomplishment: I’m a relatively new blogger. I’ve only been around for a couple of months. And I’ve only been on Pinterest about a month. I was so proud to log into Pinterest the other day to find that I had reached 100 followers! I know, I know I’m pretty pathetic right?? I don’t care! I was so proud to reach that number that I took a pic to share with you!
Fun Fact: This week is National Apple Week! Planning on celebrating with homemade apple pies, of course! What are your favorite apple recipes?
Goal for this week: Use up all the fresh jalapeno peppers and tomatoes from the garden to make homemade salsas! (Any recipe suggestions??)
Let’s end this Cooking Confessions with an inspiring quote, shall we?
Couldn’t have said it better myself, Socrates!
Thanks for reading and don’t forget to comment and give me your thoughts, tips, and suggestions!
