Summer isn’t over yet…is it??
I refuse to believe that it is. And just to prove my point, I made this extremely summery meal the other day.
Know what a coney sauce dog is? It’s forgivable if you don’t 😉 I didn’t know up until a few days ago.
When I had my first taste of a HOMEMADE coney dog.
Here’s the skinny: A coney dog is:
Tomato-meat sauce + Hot dogs + Cheddar cheese + Whatever toppings you want–mustard, pickle relish, ect.
According to Wikipedia, these colossal hot dogs are named Coney dogs because they were wildly popular and successful at Coney Island, in New York.
Of course, you can bet the ones sold at Coney Island were not health-beneficial. Obviously, today I am bringing you the healthier version which, by the way, is so amazing you will never want to buy a restaurant Coney Sauce dog again.
Here’s a step-by-step of the whole process: It’s so easy!
We’re going to start with the pretty basic meat sauce: In the interest of cutting down on the calories in my coney dogs, I used ground turkey instead of beef in my tomato-meat sauce. The rest of the sauce consists of tomato sauce, a handful of minced onion, a few seasonings for flavor.
First, you’re going to brown the meat–After the meat is no longer pink, go ahead and toss in the remaining sauce ingredients and heat until bubbly. Keep warm until you’re ready to assemble the Coney Sauce Dogs.
Now grab your hot dog buns–You can make your own or use store-bought. I made my own using my hamburger buns recipe and shaped them into hot-dog buns.
Next come the hot dogs–I grilled mine and I would definitely recommend doing it that way.
Oh, and by the way, the hot dogs I used were all-beef with no preservatives or additives. I love the Applegate brand. So good!
Place your hot dog in the bun.
Top with your warm meat sauce.
Time to finish off these gorgeous ‘thangs with a generous sprinkling of cheddar cheese.
Oh, why not add a little more cheese? Everything’s better with more cheese .
That’s coming from a true cheese-crazy Wisconsiner 😉
Even though I consider hot dogs a very summery food, I’m thinking that as we turn the corner around to fall, these little beauties would be an awesome choice for tailgating and definitely Sunday night football bashes!
To me, these hot dogs tasted like a Sloppy-Joe and hot dog combined…Which is, without a doubt, the BEST COMBO EVER.
I am definitely making these again in the near future. Summer’s not over yet!
