Learn how to cut an avocado easily and quickly every time with this simple step-by-step photo tutorial! One simple little “secret” revealed that will give you perfectly-cut avocado every time.
Here we go, friends! Another Kitchen How-To to add to the ever-growing category. So far this little series has been a big hit with you readers and many of you guys have given me requests for more, more, MORE. Who knew that melting chocolate the right way or finding out the secrets to perfect scrambled eggs could be so fun??
Q: Are there any kitchen-related topics or tutorials that you want me to cover in an upcoming Kitchen How-To? Let me know and I’ll definitely try to feature it!
For now, let’s talk about pretty much my favorite GREEN thing on the planet and how to cut it up PRETTY!
Uh, that would be avocados obviously. ♥
P.S. See the end of this post for an exhaustive list of my FAV avocado recipes. Wooooot!
Before I discovered this SUPER-simple way to cut up avocados, I kinda dreaded this duty. I also cut MYSELF more than a few times which was not fun. Except for the Frozen band-aids that I proudly sported afterwards. 😉
True story, guys.
The first step is choosing your avocados. Look for avocados that are soft, but not too squishy. Firm but not rock-hard. Using the perfect ripeness will definitely make your cutting job easier.
Using your sharpest knife, cut the avocado in half then “thwack” the pit with the knife. Assuming your avocado is ripe, the pit should pop right out.
Now score each of the avocado halfs into 1/2-in cubes with the knife, being careful not to cut all the way through the skin but all the way through the avocado.
Like so.→
Then use a spoon to scoop out the magically-already-cut avocado cubes!
IT’S LIKE MAGIC!
Sarah’s Quick Tip: Keep your avocados that pretty shade of green by squeezing a little fresh lime juice over them once they’ve been cut. The acidity from the lime juice not only keeps the avocado from turning brown, but also brings out a ton of flavors!
And that’s pretty much all there is, guys! You’ve got perfectly diced avocado in 5 with literally no effort. Except the huge-ish effort of eating straight it off the cutting board immediately afterwards.
I mean, let’s be honest: That’s the REAL reason most people even cut avocado in the first place. When they’re not putting it in chunky guac of course. 😉
Wait, that’s just me?
My personal favorite ways to eat avocado! (other than with just a spoon, of course)
Greek Avocado Toast (can you tell I HEART Greek food??)
Seriously The Best Guacamole In The World
Beef ‘n’ Bean Quesadillas with Corn Avocado Salsa

Kelly // The Pretty Bee: Cooking & Creating says
We love our avocados over here! Darryl wants to save a pit and try to plant an avocado tree. 🙂 Maybe that would actually work if we lived somewhere warm.
Sarah says
Ooh! How awesome would an avocado tree be?? I’d totally plant one myself, but just like you, it would never get that warm in Wisconsin!
Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice says
I love this post, Sarah! I’m totally trying this next time I cut an avocado. I have one of those avocado slicers but I can never get it to work right. Your method sounds so much easier! Do you have any tips on how to slice avocados? I’m horrible at that too! But I think I need to try your way of cutting right through the avocado, maybe that will work! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Sarah says
Slicing avocados is even easier than dicing with this method! All you do is run the knife down and slice through the avocado into 1/4 to 1/2-in slices. Then just scoop out the slices! Done. 🙂
Kelly - Life Made Sweeter says

I usually just spoon the whole thing out, then slice it up. Super simple! Then I eat the other half with a spoon. Straight from the skin.
