Lots of homemade salted caramel sauce, strong-brewed espresso and vanilla ice cream come together in this classic Italian dessert.
Affogato. Affoga-WHAT?!
Let’s forget about the tongue twisters and just call this complete heaven.on.earth.
Okay, so heeeeey! Happy Thursday otherwise known as the day before FRIDAY!
Can we all just agree that ice cream is so needed today? FYI: July is National Ice Cream month and I’m pretty sure that’s code for eaticecreameveryday.
Let’s give it our best go. There’s only 9 days left of July anyway…
Sidenote: CRAZY! We’ve got lots of ice cream’-n to get done in a very short time.
Can you even handle the awesomeness I’m shoving in your face today? Seriously, HUGE WARNING LABEL all over this ice cream. Caution strongly advised.
Now that we’ve got all the disclosures said and done, let’s talk affogato.
Key points → →
- Vanilla ice cream
- Homemade salted caramel sauce
- Strong-brewed espresso
All hanging out in one bowl.
Oh maaaaaah yeeeee-um.
Those Italians clearly know what they’re doing in the ice cream department.
Little known fact: Affogato IS in fact an Italian dessert. It’s right up there with gelato, tiramisu, cannoli, biscotti, and all those other totally diet-friendly desserts.
Ha-haaa.
We’re gonna start by making our own caramel sauce from SCRATCH. 5 minutes 1 pan, and 4 ingredients. That is IT! You can totally use storebought caramel sauce if you’re short on time, but really? This liquid gold is just that: GOLD. ♥
The three S’s. Sweet, salty, and spoon-worthy. Perfectoooooo.
That espresso. CLEARLY the most crucial part of any affogato. Brew it up strong and let it cool slightly.
Eek! This is getting exciting. The last step is by far the most fun.—It’s time to throw all this awesomeness into one bowl and take your tastebuds on a trip to Italy.
Place two XXL scoops of vanilla ice cream in your most heavy-duty ice cream bowl…
Drizzle the caramel ’til the ice cream is clearly covered. Like soooooo…→
And now for my favorite part of ALL…drown the whole thing in espresso.
And dive in. And never come out.
Extra salted caramel sauce on top of this insanity? Let’s do it.
Uh-huhhhhhh…this is what REAL love looks like. ♥

I am now totally regretting that I didn’t order an affogato in Italy…what was I thinking?! Must make up for it by making this. That caramel is just calling to me.
Sarah says
Oh my gosh, I bet an affogato would be even BETTER if you were to go to actual Italy! LOL. So you should just have 5-ish servings of THIS to make up for it. 😉
