Choosing Your Sausage
We love using a lighter less-greasy sausage such as chicken or turkey, but this dish will work great with a variety sausage types! Kielbasa is one of our other go-to’s when we don’t have chicken or turkey sausage on hand.
We recommend buying sausage links and cutting them 1/2-inch thick circles for best results.

Tips for Perfect Sausage and Sweet Potatoes
- Cut vegetables in uniform size – ideally, you want the sweet potatoes and broccoli in 1/2-inch pieces so they cook at the same rate.
- Use fresh garlic – skip the jarred garlic this time around and go for fresh. It makes a huge difference flavor-wise in the sauce!
- Don’t overcook garlic – sauté the garlic until a very light golden brown and fragrant. This should only take 1-2 minutes.
- Arrange ingredients in a single layer on sheet pan – this will help everything roast evenly.
Recipe Variations
Try these ideas for a different twist on this dish.
- Swap meats – try using cubed chicken breasts or thighs in place of the sausage.
- Try different vegetables – this recipe is very adaptable to different veggies – try brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cauliflower, or sweet pepper.
- Skip the meat – for a vegetarian-friendly dinner, skip the sausage and add extra veggies in its place.
Make Ahead Instructions
Follow these instructions for make-ahead tips.
- Cut vegetables and sausage – these can be stored in refrigerator up to 3 days. For best results, we recommend storing your sweet potatoes in cold water to keep them fresh and prevent them from drying out.
- Make honey garlic sauce – this sauce may be stored in refrigerator up to 1 week. If you find your sauce has thickened too much in the refrigerator, heat it 30-60 seconds in the microwave before adding to recipe.
- Storing leftovers – once everything is roasted, this meal stores well in the refrigerator up to 6 days. We recommend reheating individual servings in microwave 1-2 minutes.

There’s no way around it, this is just a sheet pan of dinner goals. The sweet and savory honey garlic sauce coats everything with SO much flavor and really takes the humble veggies + sausage to the next level.
The one dinner everyone needs up their sleeve. There’s no going wrong here!

I normally don’t leave reviews, however, this recipe is the best thing I think I have ever made! My husband doesn’t like sweet potatoes or sausage but he LOVED them in this! We doubled the recipe because we like to meal prep & served over mashed potatoes!
Sarah says
That’s amazing to hear, Cori! I love the sound of serving this dish over mashed potatoes as well. 🙂

Hello! I’m making postpartum freezer meals for my boyfriend’s sister. Is there any reason this couldn’t be a freezer meal? It wouldn’t be frozen long, a month tops.
Sarah says
Hi! Yes, you should have no issues freezing this meal! It should freeze fine up to 2 months.
L says
Would you suggest freezing the veggies, sausage, and combined sauce all together for it to be a dump and go kind of deal?
Sarah says
Yes, I would recommend freezing everything together!
Greta says
Would you recommend putting everything together and freezing before cooking it, or cooking and then freezing it?
Sarah says
Hi! I’d recommend freezing this dish after cooking.

Hi. How many WW points is a serving? This looks delicious!
Sarah says
Hi Patricia – I’m unsure of WW information for this recipe, but there is basic nutritional information in the recipe card that you could likely plug into a WW points calculator to find out!
Mikaila says
This recipe is delicious, but I must have missed something because my oven is now a mess from the sauce exploding/ spraying everywhere while cooking!
Sarah says
Hi Mikaila – I’m so sorry that happened to you with your oven, that’s never happened to me before with this recipe! Glad you enjoyed it though!
Karli says
Replaced broccoli with one red pepper and half an onion, this recipe was ssoooooo yummy. The honey garlic sauce is flavorful enough but not too overpowering like some recipes. Will be making again!!
Sarah says
Thanks for reporting back, Karli! Glad to hear this recipe was a hit. 🙂
Melissa says
The type of chicken sausage was not clarified so I had actual chicken sausage – and that doesn’t work to cut prior to bake. Please clarify the type of links you have in the picture where you can actually cut before cooking. Also the sweet potato took WAY longer than 30 minutes. More like an hour in the oven.
Sarah says
Hi Melissa – a section in the blog post goes into detail about the types of sausage options including the type that I used. I’d suggest referring to that if you try this recipe again!
Alli says
This may be the first time I’ve ever reviewed a recipe. Holy cow this was SO yummy!! I cooked it for 27 mins and everything was cooked just right. Next time I definitely will double the recipe so we can have more leftovers. I couldn’t wait for lunch today because I knew the leftovers we had were waiting for me in the fridge. So delicious, will definitely be adding to my regular rotation!
Sarah says
Alli, that’s amazing to hear! Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review. 🙂
Janine Grossman says
What kind of sausage? Italian? herb? so many different types. You did mention keilbasa as a substitute but not the kind of sausage you used. Please help
Sarah says
Hi Janine – the flavor of the sausage does not matter as much in this recipe. I typically use Italian but any kind works.
Megan says
I tried this recipe tonight and not sure what went wrong. I had difficulty getting the sauce to thicken and I have now been baking it for over an hour and the sweet potato’s are still seem almost raw while the sausage is nearly burnt. I even cut the cubes fairly small so I don’t think size is the issue. Let me know if you have suggestions!
Sarah says
Hi Megan. I’m so sorry to hear you had problems with this recipe – I’m happy to help you troubleshoot! Were you able to get the sauce to a simmer and then reduce it? Sometimes it can take a couple minutes for it to thicken up. As far as roasting, did you roast the sweet potatoes in a single layer in the pan? Sometimes overcrowding can make them not cook as well. In addition, were your sweet potatoes stored in the refrigerator or at room temp? Typically I recommend storing sweet potatoes at room temperature so the texture doesn’t turn hard.
Emily says
Subbed maple syrup for honey as that’s what I had. Love this combo, super delicious and will make again!
Sarah says
Maple syrup sounds like an amazing substitution!!
Leah P says
This meal was awful. The veggies got so smushy and smells like farts. Nothing cooked properly. The sauce made everything burn. It tastes bad. It is so crusty. We cooked everything and closely followed the recipe, we weren’t sure where we went wrong. The sauce burnt off and made everything so mushy.
Sarah says
Hi Leah – I’d love to help you troubleshoot what may have went wrong with this recipe. It sounds to me like you may have overcooked the vegetables. Were the vegetables in fresh condition before roasting? And how long did they cook for in the oven?
Elle says
Can confirm that this recipe does not smell like farts 😂 We actually made it so we could see for sure. Haha! It was really delicious, easy, and one we’ll put on our rotation.
Hallie Bullard says
This recipe was super easy & it is incredibly tasty! I am definitely going to start making this regularly! Thank you for the great recipe! 😁👍🏻
Sarah says
Incredible to hear, Hallie! Enjoy. 🙂
Emma D says
Very yummy recipe! I have made this twice and love having it for leftovers. Small warning though – with the veggies and the sauce it smells a little like a fart when cooking in the oven so if you are living with roommates like I am beware haha!
Olivia says
This is incredible! We doubled the sauce, and after cooking the veggies there wasn’t much sauce left on the sheet pan. This is one of our new favorite meals.
Sarah says
Glad to hear this recipe is a new dinner favorite, Olivia! Enjoy. 😀
Paityn says
So easy to make and super delicious! Thank you for the great recipe.

You’re very welcome, Paityn! Enjoy. 🙂
