How To Store Sauce
We love making big batches of this sauce and storing them in mason jars. They will store well in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Can this BBQ sauce be frozen? Yes it can! Allow the sauce to cool completely, then transfer to a freezer-safe container leaving 2 inches of air on top. Freeze sauce up to 2 months and thaw completely in refrigerator when you’re ready to use it.

Tips for Perfect BBQ
- Start with a ketchup base – ketchup has a lot of flavor in it and a perfect thick texture which serves as an amazing base for homemade BBQ.
- Use a mix of brown sugar and molasses – these two sweeteners add a perfect level of sweetness to the sauce and give it that signature dark, sugary flavor you’ll find in BBQ sauce.
- Simmer sauce – allow the sauce to simmer 8-10 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
Recipe Variations
Try these ideas for a different twist on this sauce!
- Add fruit – try adding 1/2 cup mango or pineapple puree for a fruity sauce.
- Make it spicy – add cayenne pepper or your favorite hot sauce to taste for a spicy sauce.
- Try a different sweetener – try honey or maple syrup in place of the molasses
- Make it smoky – add a few drops of liquid smoke for a smoky kick.
How To Use Sauce
The sky’s the limit for what you can use this BBQ sauce for! Check out some of these ideas…
- Grilled chicken, steak, or ribs
- Use as a pizza sauce
- Pulled pork, chicken, or beef
- Smoked brisket
- A dipping sauce for chicken tenders, wings, or nuggets
- Drizzle on top of burgers, brats, or hot dogs
- Homemade baked beans

For how simple this BBQ sauce is to pull off, you wouldn’t believe the amount of flavor we’re packing inside! It’s got the perfect level of sweetness, lots of flavor from the spices, and just a little tangy from the apple cider vinegar and mustard.

Rachel (teacher-chef) says
I really enjoy the fact that this uses tomato sauce instead of ketchup – that has all those yucky added fillers to it too! What a beautiful looking sauce – and the want to eat with a spoon is the only way that I consider a sauce/marinade a success!
Sarah says
I’ll admit that I WAS thinking of adding ketchup this sauce, since nearly every recipe I found called for it, but then I was like oh what the heck, it’ll be so much healthier if I just sub tomato sauce. I guess it worked! LOL. 😉 Thank you so much, Rachel!
Cindy @ Pick Fresh Foods says
I can’t stand that nearly every bottle sold in stores has HFCS. Who needs that?! love how easy BBQ sauce is to make and yours looks great!
Sarah says
Thank you Cindy! And right?! Nobody needs that “poison”! 😉
