Ingredients You Will Need
- Strawberries
- Maple syrup
- Water
- 2% or skim milk
- Steel-cut oats
- Salt
Fresh vs. Frozen Strawberries
Both fresh and frozen strawberries work great in this recipe! If using frozen, there is no need to thaw them before roasting, you just may need to add a few additional minutes to cook time.
Tips for Perfect Strawberry Steel-Cut Oats
- Roast strawberries in maple syrup – maple syrup is the perfect sweetener for roasting as it gives a lovely complex flavor to the strawberries.
- Use half water and half milk for oatmeal – using half milk will give the oats a rich and creamy flavor.
- Cook oatmeal over low heat – steel-cut oats take a bit longer to cook than other oats and low and slow is the best way to go for the creamiest texture.
Recipe Variations
Try these ideas for a different twist on this oatmeal.
- Use a different fruit – try peaches, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries in place of the strawberries. You can even use a combination of different kinds of fruit.
- Substitute sweetener – use equal parts honey or agave nectar in place of the maple syrup.
- Top oatmeal – try topping oatmeal with toasted nuts, flaked coconut, or dried fruit.
Once you try steel-cut oats this way you may never be able to have them any other way again! Roasting the strawberries in maple syrup really brings out a juiciness that pairs so well with the creamy oats.
Faceplants only into these beautiful bowls, y’all.
