Ingredients You Will Need
- Extra-firm tofu
- Cornstarch
- Vegetable oil
- Orange
- Soy sauce
- Rice wine vinegar
- Brown sugar
- Butter lettuce
- Green onions
- Sesame seeds
How to Press Tofu
Prepare the tofu for pressing by cutting the tofu in half width-wise. Lay the two tofu slabs in a single layer on a kitchen towel, place another kitchen towel on top, arrange on a plate, and place a sheet pan on top.
Now place something heavy on top of the sheet pan (like a bowl of fruit or a medium-weight book) and allow to sit for 30-60 minutes. Once the tofu has been pressed, you’re ready to dice it into cubes and proceed with cooking.
Tips for Perfect Tofu Lettuce Wraps
- Use extra-firm tofu – extra-firm tofu has less moisture and cooks up firmer.
- Bake tofu in a single layer – this will help the tofu cook evenly and get crispy.
- Shake pan halfway through baking – shaking the pan halfway through baking will also help evenly crisp up the tofu.
- Use fresh orange for sauce – fresh orange and grated zest makes a world of difference flavor-wise in the sauce.
Recipe Variations
Try these ideas for a different twist on these wraps.
- Make it spicy – add red pepper flakes, hot sauce, or sauteed jalapeno to taste.
- Add veggies – fold sauteed sweet pepper, mushrooms, or spinach into orange tofu filling.
- Serve tofu over rice – skip the lettuce wraps and serve the tofu stir fry-style over steamed rice.
One bite of these lettuce wraps and you’ll be thinking “orange chicken who?” The tofu is seriously so crisp and soaks up all that amazing orange sauce while the lettuce wrap keeps everything light and fresh.
