Choosing Your Sweet Potatoes
Medium-sized long sweet potatoes work best for this recipe. Ideally, you want sweet potato slices that are about 1-2 inches in diameter because this size cooks up crispy.
To prep the sweet potatoes for roasting, leave the skin on, trim ends, and slice sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Arrange them in a single layer on a greased sheet pan and they’re ready for roasting.
Tips for Perfect Smashed Sweet Potatoes
- Slice sweet potatoes 1/4 inch thick – I found that this thickness was perfect for roasting the sweet potatoes prior to smashing them.
- Roast sweet potatoes with half of maple sauce – roasting the sweet potatoes with half the sauce builds flavor and the other half is amazing drizzled on top of sweet potatoes once they’re broiled.
- Smash sweet potatoes with drinking glass – once the sweet potatoes are tender, remove them from the oven and gently smash them flat. The flatter you can get them, the crispier they will be! I find that the bottom of a drinking glass works best for this job.
- Broil sweet potatoes – 3-5 minutes under the broiler will crisp up the sweet potatoes perfectly.
Recipe Variations
Try these ideas for a different twist on these sweet potatoes.
- Use a different sweetener – try honey, agave nectar, or brown sugar in place of the maple syrup.
- Try another fresh herb – thyme or parsley would be great.
- Skip the nuts or use another kind – you can skip the nuts entirely or use walnuts, almonds, or pine nuts in place of the pecans.
It’s the salted maple sauce that really takes all the flavors in these sweet potatoes to the next level! Sweet + salty always wins and it just works in these crispy sweet potatoes.
Forget about sweet potato casserole, these smashed sweet potatoes are where the real action is at.
